AoC was released too soon, it was unfinished and buggy. Im sure they patched it up by now, but first impressions are very important and basically killed that game.

I dont mind if GW2 needs a 5year dev cycle if it means a quality product at the end of the day.

I do however have a problem with ANets handling of information control reguarding the new title, and the way gw1 was basically abandoned.

Ok so they want to concentrate on the new game, but the time between titles is still many years, and GW1 did have a large fanbase of players and they were potential customers for further expansions. Even if it meant only 1 campaign a year or even more frequent smaller content packages like the BMP it would have been better than nothing.

They did eventually realise their mistake partially and now have the live team work on small things, but that comes in too little too late.

To quote from "Field of Dreams", "If you build it they will come."
If GW2 is a well built game you can bet it will get many players from GW1 that now say they won't purchase it.

i think that what really pisses off "fans, or ex'fans" is not the long delay between the two games (the delay is comprehensible, darkfall > a while), but rather the lack of information about it for a while. As for myself, i think that the declining support offered to GW1 for gw2 is what pisses me off the more. gg anet for losing gradually your fan base form gw1 by just breaking the game more and more

Wow, didn't know he had said such a thing. Oh, bitter irony! I feel kinda bad for him, though. It's a shame TR failed so much. It's not such a bad game. It's just... unremarkable and lukewarm.

As for Anet, i guess they wouldn't have announced and hyped GW2 back then, if they knew it was going to be a larger project than they had anticipated. All of this fuss wouldn't exist today had it been so.

Still, i understand that people grow restless. And i do believe that they have to start putting some info out. It's a two-edged blade, if you think about it. Overhype is harmful for a number of reasons, obviously. But ironically, dishing out no info whatsoever can have the same effect: when something *is* actually released people might react saying "*This* is what all the secrecy was about? Is *this* what we've been waiting for?"

I have hope though, that it won't take much longer. The corporate gears are still shifting into place, and once that bureaucratic reorganization stuff is out of the way, the time may come for some solid info to come out.

It wouldn't have changed anything. People didn't buy WoW becuase they were desperate for a game (any game) and WoW just happened to be released first.

Don't fool yourself.

One of the ways to prove this is that WoW's subscription numbers didn't even slow down after GW got released. By your assumption (People just happened to play WoW first so they don't move to GW), people who were playing WoW when GW was released would've stayed with WoW (they mostly did, I'd imagine), but new players who hadn't played WoW yet (then) would've bought GW instead, and GW's sale figures would've been more than 11.5 million copies (a lot lot more, as the figure is from WoW's current active subscriptions and not even the sale figures of the 1 game, 2 expansion packs) minus whatever amount of players WoW had before GW was out.

Is that the case? No, not even a fraction close.

Has it ever crossed your mind that your friends went back to WoW not because they don't want to abandon WoW, but because GW IS NOT AS FUN for them?

And way to show them what kind of community this game has there, btw.

No offence, Issac, we got nothing. It was essentially:

"Trust us - everything is ok. But we never made any promises about release dates."

That's an excuse as to why there is no information on a beta/release.

Don't trick yourself into thinking that someone deigning to speak to us changes anything or that it means they'll interact with us more. It's like when you write a letter of complaint and you get a reply saying "thank you for your letter - we are looking into it". It doesn't mean your query will get addressed any faster or be concluded with the result you were hoping for.

He never did. It was a misquote in a magazine.

A note to Guild Wars players from Richard Garriott:

Recently, I was surprised to see a quote attributed to me describing the Guild Wars episodic sales model as a "failed experiment." Obviously, that is not true. Guild Wars is NCsoft - North America's flagship product in terms of both number of customers and total profit and thus by any measure is a resounding success. I personally am a big fan of the game and an admirer of the ArenaNet team that has taken many risks in creating an innovative product and a successful new business model for MMOs. In fact, the Guild Wars business model has been so successful that we are pursuing more products with this same model.

We pay them money and we're lucky if we get the kind "hi anet arent bad plz dont hate us" letter once every year, and you think thats some kind of decent public relations strategy?

This letter says nothing apart from "plz keep playing GW1, we can't finish GW2 fast enough". Anet have messed up the anticipation of GW2 bigtime, if you can't finish a game fast, don't announce you're making it and then 7 years later release it and expect people to be massively happy with you.

And all you need to do is accept that something takes time to code. All the complaining and moaning won't make the game arrive quicker.

Use the time to get what need from GW1. If unhappy play something else in the time frame between now and then. Aeon is coming out... really expect NCSoft to release two games of the same genre close together? Nope.

I would have liked to have seen GW2 quicker... but will accept it when it comes. All the daggers at Anet wont achieve anything.

Plus I have faith Linsey will keep things ticking along with some nice surprises for us.

Default 1st - thx for the letter.

disclaimer: just shooting the wind here/theorizing. Haven't played GW for quite some time now, and like many others, awaiting the best gorramit game of w/e year this "2" comes out to.

Just my stance on the whole "top secret" "hush-hush" stance Anet's taken on providing it's playerbase on even a tiny peek into the game. From my standpoint when GW2 was announced, that it was going to be a "WoW-like" + guildwars style. So, I was very excited about that because GW did have its limitations, so you know GW2 will be better. But, now since there's still hasn't been anything revealed to us, it's really becoming strange. (as others have expressed...vaporware...marketing strat...etc)

I know they've said this is an ambitious game, I dont really mind even if the beta was 2012 or beyond, but (just whistling dixie) what if all that time/strength/effort they mustered up to "keep GW2 invisible" (til near release) and it either comes out:

[1] a WoW-clone (ofcourse, GW improved)
[2] a WoW-killer (ofcourse, GW improved)

Then what...
For [1] It would show that in the end it was just a huge "hype strat", that they can do what WoW did (and what other games have done). It certainly wouldn't be much of a disappointment since it's GW, but to have kept it "hidden" all that time for a "clone" would be a real "head-scratch-er", if it came to that.

For [2] This would be what everyone would be shooting for ofcourse, and the build-up would be worth it.

Either way, it's going to be a new game, like many new games (w/e and when/e something's released) there will be new/old playerbase, so generally I don't think they'd be too worried about losing players (as ppl expressed and be it small or big) since it is overall a business to them, while overall a game to us, so there will always be a new playerbase coming in. (In any new game with an existing playerbase, the gain of players usually outweigh the loss of players)

In closing, Anet (hint hint)

1) take your time, make it the best dang "it", it can be for the long run. (looks like that's what the aim is w/ all the secrecy)
2) Show us something? a tiny spec? (pls) maybe April? haven't been keeping track of all the news, is there some kind of HoM update or big update around the 4th yr anni? or maybe one tiny thing every yr before the decision on beta yr...wishful thinking eh?...or not?...

[again, dont mind the rant, just thinking out loud ]

/g'day.

here's my "waiting for gw2 guide"

1) If you don't pve, then pve (All I do is pve )
2) Focus entirely on one character
3) Beat all the campaigns+eotn
4) Fill HoM
5) Get filthy rich and do titles, pvp, etc.

If you did all that then gratz, ur ready for gw2! (help me out with the money and hom though! )

There have been some published rumors over the past few days about Guild Wars 2 delays, and I'm writing you today to set the record straight.
Just out of curiosity, do you guys actually believe they would have "set the record straight" if it weren't for the product release info getting leaked?

.........

.........

.........

I, for one, don't think they intended to tell us anything but as soon as the ugly truth popped up, they ran out of options. And, honestly, all they really did was confirm most of the speculation that was out there.....that GW2 got pushed back (and don't pretend like this has been the intention since 2007 or you're mentally handicapped).

Well all i can say is, "HERE HERE!!"

DO NOT release this game because of pressure from fans. DO NOT do it.

We will buy multiple accounts like GW1 and I DEMAND the BEST and nothing short of THE BEST. If I have to wait another 5 years for it then 5 years IT IS!!!

SO everyone Just shut up and take a pill.

In the mean time i will continue to get the LDoA title. By the time I get it on all of my Perma pre toons GW2 should be out on shelves!!!

Again let me express my willingness to HURRY UP AND WAIT!!! Gota love this game.

Take it slow and easy boys.

(If you need feedback I'm your man)

Do you expect a monthly, personal letter, addressed to you from every game developer and/or company you've purchased a game from?

You bought a game, not company stock.

ANET hasn't messed up the anticipation on anything. How can you anticipate something you never speak of? The only people messing up the anticipation are the highly impatient players who stomp their feet and want their cookies right now.

It's those, who for some reason, are tired of Anet's lazy and poorly thought out approach on things, but at the same time want GW2 in less than 3 years, which would make it a lazy and poorly produced game.

If you're so bitter at Anet that you'll refuse to buy the game, that's a personal issue you've created on your own. If you're in the market for a cheaply made game that took less than 3 years to make you have a ton of options in the true F2P market already.

This is true... although I was playful thinking to myself the other day, and I don't think/or assume this is what happened I was just having fun. Maybe GW2 went the way of Windows Longhorn, head honcho came in and said "This is crap" and they had to start over. Could explain the "We decided gw 2 was a much bigger ambition..." Dont take my thoughts serious, I am just thinking.

I would rather wait 5 years and get a great game than wait 3 and get a just par game. I am as anxious as anyone else but the bottom line is if your so anxious that you demand release etc etc and they appease your demands in the end you had nothing to be anxious about because its gonna suck. Just think how much better that feeling of having gw2 is going to be when it comes 5 years down the road and you have this gem to play.

They hint at 2010/2011 so looking at game release trends we can say 2012 or so, that is 3-4 years down the road, if they gave us a screen shot now it would look horrid, many textures and effects missing, bugged models, all kinds of stuff that will turn you off to the game. We might get a cine next year.

I'm sure he's referring to the rumors based on the news of ncsoft lay offs.
